| "Massa"
Siede Massa tra lucida verzura
d'aranci, a specchio del tirreno mare;
vedi tagliente dietro lei spiccare
come un zaffiro immenso la Tambura;
verdeggiante e declive in una pura
chiarità d'alba il Belveder t'appare;
sola, in disparte sembra minacciare
nubi passanti la Brugiana oscura.
Mi sveglia il canto delle capinere
tra le magnolie, e m'assopisce un lento
ronzio di ruote e romba di gualchiere.
Come bimbo cullato io m'addormento;
e allor fugge, allor vola il mio pensiere,
ed in Romagna accanto a voi mi sento.
Giovanni Pascoli

THE AREA OF MASSA CARRARA

The area of Massa Carrara, in the north of Tuscany, is a piece of land that
nature generously provided for. Great features of the area are the sea and
Apuan Alps. 10 km of very beautiful beaches stretch between Marina di
Carrara, Marina di Massa, Ronchi and Cinquale di Montignoso and are ideal
for family tourism. Further north, in the hills, is Massa founded in the
1500's by the Malaspinas. The city, built around the medieval structure, is
overlooked by the castle and is full of beautiful monuments. Behind the
city
and into the mountains lies a treasure precious to sculptors of all times.
Between the Apuan Alps and the Appenini, on the border of three regions,
Tuscany, Emilia and Liguria, is Lunigiana. A beautiful region, ancient land
rich in history and tradition, filled with medieval towns and castles which
make the diverse views of this land suggestive and relaxing.
MARINA di MASSA

The resources of our land have always distinguished Massa from all other
towns, and make it attractive to the visitor's eye. It is, in fact, rare to
find so much variety of scenery in such a small area: ranging form sea to
countryside, from the city to the hills and Apuan Alps, with their hidden
resource always known to man, marble, which has been extracted in the
nearby
Carrara and sculpted since roman times; to the mineral water springs which
flow from the mountains. Topped by a wonderful climate which means it never
snows and orange trees grow prosperous as many palm trees do too.
Not far there are many mountainous villages of very ancient origin (like
Altagnana, Antona and Pariana) inhabited, most probably, since
prehistorical
times.
Marina di Massa is characterised by ten km of sandy beaches, modern
equipment, blue sea, politeness, friendly people and good cuisine. These
are
the most suggestive memories that tourists will have a after a holiday in
this part of the Mediterranean.
What disitinguishes this area is the
variety of climate in such a small radius. You can go from the sea to the
mountains by car in half an hour and enjoy many different sceneries.
For example the pine-woods and hills that reach the Apuan Alps. Wonderful
mountains, where marble has been extracted for centuries, symbolising a
cultural civilization which found it's seed in a place like this. This
unique and distinguished scenery is ideal for any holiday. As well as for
it's sun and sea Marina di Massa will be rembered for the wonderful climate.
During the winter it rarely gets any colder than 0 degrees C. The mountains
proctect Massa from cold winds. Spring starts early, and from the beginning
of February trees start blossoming, especially the orange tree, symbolic of
this area and often described by famous poets such as Pascoli and Repetti.
Another characteristic of this area is the possibility of going on day
trips
or excursions nearby and admire the beautiful scenery and the cultural
history.
It doesn't take long to reach the marble quarries, the Cinque Terre, the
Gulf of Lerici or the beautiful bay of Portovenere. Many famous cities are
nearby too, like Pisa with it's leaning tower, Lucca renowned for it's 100
churches or Florence, considered the art capital of Italy. Crafts are also
very important in this area and marble is the most used material because of
it's availability, here you will easily find, vases, sculptures and many
other marble objects.
Food is also very important in Marina di Massa, restaurants serve fish
based
meals mainly. The typical home-made local cuisine is also very good and you
will find foods you won't find anywhere else such as the unmissable sweet
rice cake, or Tordelli (a type of pasta) or baccala' and stoccafisso (dried
fish) served with polenta. And talking about food it's impossible not to
mention the local wine.
Candia is one of the best you will find in the
whole
of Italy. The white Candia is unbeatable with fish and desserts.
The area is great if you want to practice sports too. As well as sailing
and
swimming in the sea, the great choice of facilities mean you will be
able to
choose between tennis, roller-skating, horseback riding, volleyball,
basketball, football, baseball or fishing.
Nightlife is great. There are plenty of bars and night-clubs in Versilia
where shows and concerts are planned. In the summer period (June-September)
the tourism office organizes many events, such as theatre and art shows and
many other events.
At the end of the summer Marina di Massa host a firework display by the
sea
to say goodbye to the tourists.
THE SEA

The fifteen kilometres of beach protected by pine-woods and the Apuan Alps
mean that the beaches of Marina di Carrara, Marina di Massa, Ronchi,
Poveromo, Cinquale, where people have been coming on holiday since the
beginning of the 20th century, have a naturally good position and
exceptional setting. The climate is also wonderful, because of the sea and
mountains, with short winters and long warm summers.
The Apuan riviera attracts thousands of tourists and offers fun and a
relaxing time to everyone, whatever your interests may be. The great
motorway, railway, sea and air connections make it very easy to visit the
nearby Lunigiana and Garfagnana mountain regions, and the cities of Lucca,
Pisa and Florence, to mention a few.
MOUNTAINS AND PARKS

An ancient legend says that the Apuan marbles are the cristallization of
falling stars. Tears, salty water turned in to stone. This legend is an
amazing vision of the mountains overlooking the sea. In actual fact,
getting
to the top of the 2000 metres high mountains is easy and the roads that
lead
there offer a beautiful view leading to Pasquilio, Pian della Fioba and
Campocecina, places that must be visited to enjoy the beauty of the valleys
of Lunigiana and Garfagnana and the variety of hills and mountains.
