Amnesty International

The goal of Amnesty International is to promote the knowledge and
adherence of the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" and prevent
specific abuse.
On 10 December 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations
proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. For the first time
in the history of humanity, a document encompassing all peoples of the
world, without distinctions, had been written. For the first time it was
written that there are human rights which every human being should have
access to for the mere reason of existing. Nevertheless the Declaration
is still disregarded, because it still remains vastly unknown.
One of the goals of Amnesty International is to inform about the history
and contents of this document, through all possible mediums.

UNICEF

UNICEF, The United Nations Children's Fund, is an Agency of the United
Nations founded in 1946 in order to help child victims of the Second
World war. In the period between 1946 to 1953 it was present in several
European countries, including Italy, with very many participations to
the defence of children. The situation was dramatic: in 1949 more than
72 children died every thousand born and in poorer regions such as
Basilicata the rate was in the region of 110 deaths every thousand.
The UNICEF helped Italy of the post-war period in massive way: as an
example, supplying 800,000 shoes to children and 700,000 square meters
of material for clothes, building milk factories in many Italian
provinces, supplying the first incubators to the paediatric units of
many great hospitals in particular in the south of the country,
distributing milk in powder and vitamins, medicines and antibiotics, in
those days rare and extremely critical to combat infectious diseases,
helping catering in schools and re-establishing courses of mass
education (in 1950, 11 % of the Italians were illiterate, and in some
areas of the south it was around 30%!). In the spring of the 1950 UNICEF
aid had reached, in Italy alone, 1,300,000 children and mothers!
With the gradual improvement of the economy of European countries, the
Funds' activities turned towards children of the underdeveloped nations
in Africa, Asia and Latin America, until 1953 when following the results
obtained, the United Nations decided to indefinitely prolong the mandate
of UNICEF.
In 1965 the UNICEF receives the Nobel Prize for peace. In 1989 the
Convention on the Rights of Infancy is approved where it states that
UNICEF is partly responsible for guaranteeing respect for children's
human rights around the world. UNICEF has staff in 158 countries.

FAO

The Food and Agriculture Organization was founded in 1945 with the
mandate to improve levels agricultural productivity, standards of life
and feeding of rural populations.
Today FAO is one of the leading specialised Agencies of the United
Nations, the most important in the agriculture, forest resources,
fishing and rural development fields. FAO is an intergovernmental
organization that counts 180 states members, also joined by the European
Union.
Since its foundation, FAO has aimed to alleviate poverty and hunger
through the promotion of agricultural development and the improvement of
nutrition and food security, defined as being accessibility for anyone,
anytime, of the food necessary to lead a healthy and active life.
Food production has increased with a rhythm, unseen prior to 1945 when
FAO was formed, a better rhythm that the one at which the world growth
reached the doubling of the population, in the same period of time.
Since the '60's the percentage of people suffering hunger in developing
countries has decreased from 50% to 20%. Even so, more than 790 million
people worldwide - more than the population of Europe and North America
combined - are still suffering hunger.
The Organization has the peculiar priority to encourage a rural and
agricultural supportable development, and in the long term develope strategy
to increase the alimentary production and the emergency that concurs of
preservation and managing the natural resources. The goal is to satisfy the
needs of the present and future generations promoting a development that
do not degrade the habitat and that is technically appropriate, supportable
and economically and socially acceptable.
